Valero Changes - Residents Concerned

July 26, 2009: Valero Service Station on South Avenue is looking to expand it's business to include a Dunkin Donuts drive thru and increased hours of operation. Residents are expressing concerns about the increased traffic and noise the building will bring. Concerns are hightened by the fact that the Valero property has been and continues to be in violation of current zoning ordinances.

gas station. I am opposed to the plan to open a gas station with a Dunkin
Donuts for several reasons:
- Traffic:
Traffic is already heavy on Route 9D. A Dunkin Donuts/convenience store will
only exacerbate the traffic problem. Cars in the southbound lane trying to
turn left into the Dunkin Donuts will block traffic heading south. A Dunkin
Donuts will encourage even more drivers to bypass Route 9 and use 9D.
- Noise:
Dunkin Donuts attracts loiterers. The Dunkin Donuts on Route 9 has become a
hangout for teenagers and motorcycle and car enthusiasts. In addition, a
Dunkin Donuts will mean more tractor trailers on South Avenue. All of this
will increase the noise level in the immediate area.
The Village of Wappingers Falls is a pleasant place to live. Let's keep it
that way by maintaining the primarily residential feel of South Avenue.

bought my house 6 1/2 years ago, on what I perceived was a "busy" street,
but NOT a commercial street! I am firmly against any further commercial
development of South Avenue. Route 9-D is NOT Route 9! The zoning board
should work to return South Avenue to its residential roots. There are many
many empty store fronts on East and West Main Streets. Any further commercial
development in the Village should be in the business district on both East
and West Main Street. Commercial expansion on South Avenue/Route 9-D
should be completely off limits. The zoning board has the power to prevent
further commercial development on South Avenue. It is a residential street
with houses on both sides of the street. The only reason that the Valero
Gas Station is there today, is because it became a gas station before zoning
laws were enacted in the Village. It should not be allowed to ex...

It was the citizens of the village who went around with a petition to STOP another threat to our quality of living. It's time again to moblize against this threat again. We do NOT need this. We who live on South Ave put up with enough---this is not rt 9.
