2010 Picnic in the Park at $15,558 and Rising

The Mayor and Village Board eliminated the Annual Easter Egg Hunt from this years budget. The Christmas Celebration has been cut by more than 60%. Summer concerts were cut by 30%. To some this might appear as good fiscal planning in these tough economic times. That is not the case.

After cutting the traditional events the Board increased the Picnic in the Park budget line by 25 percent to accommodate the 3-Day WPDH Roofathon. The line was increased from $10,000 in 2009 to $12,500 in 2010. The increase was not enough for the Recreation Committee. For the second year in a row the event is thousands of dollars over budget, leaving village taxpayers responsible for excesses from the controversial three day WPDH Roofathon event.

From Picnic to Porn-in-the-Park

Edited 08/01/2010
A group of residents were at the May 2010 Village Board Meeting to ask the board to deny WPDH's request to use Mesier Park to hold their 3-day Roofathon event. Some residents expressed concern that the type of activity that Roofathon brings is not appropriate for a community to endorse and that it hurts the reputation of the village. One resident presented the Board with a petition signed by 40 village residents. The petition complained of the traffic, parking, general disruption and inconvenience that comes with Roofathon. Dispite the concerns the Board voted unanimously to allow the event. Should they really have been surprised with what happened at the event?

Imagine...

Revitalized housing and inviting sidewalks leading to a Community Center with a small marina at a waterfront park on Market Street…  Upscale housing for the 55 and older crowd on Franklindale Ave… Historic lighting, pocket parks with a lighted and visible waterfall in a thriving business district… Shade trees lining South Avenue with improved sidewalks and crosswalks leading to Village green spaces and playgrounds.

Those are some of the ideas that planners heard from Village residents and business people at the February 18th Waterfront Revitalization Public Visioning Workshop.
